FAQ
You’re going to ask us a bunch of questions, and we’re going to answer them immediately.
Where is the thing?
York School of Defence’s regular venue at the Melbourne Centre, Escrick Street, YO10 4AW.
I took an arrow to the knee…
The site is fully accessible for any wheelchair or mobility issues.
Caffeine?
Yes, but don’t expect frothy coffees. Tea, coffee and hot chocolate will be provided throughout the weekend. You are welcome to help yourself, all we ask is that you clean up after yourself.
Nicotine?
Load up on gum and patches, the site (including exterior spaces) is strictly no smoking or vaping
Food?
Sugary snacks from the tuck shop. If you want real food bring a packed lunch/pot noodle or walk ten minutes to the shops. The closest shop to the venue is the Co-Op on Paragon Street, York, YO10 4AH, right outside the York Barbican concert venue. There is also a One Stop at 47 Heslington Rd, York YO10 5AR, just behind the Melbourne Centre. If you want a caffeine fix the Bison Coffee House is also on Heslington Road, number 17, just down the road from the One Stop.
Can I bring my kids?
No. They aren’t old enough to understand the majesty of spadroon and will be literally blinded by it’s brilliance.
Where should I sleep?
Sadly we cannot offer sleeping accommodation in the venue. There are dozens, if not hundreds, of guest houses, hotels, B&Bs and other places to stay within walking distance of the training venue. We recommend using the venue’s address, York Railway Institute, 24 Queen St, York YO24 1AD, on either https://www.booking.com or https://www.AirBnB.co.uk. This may be especially useful if you are coming with friends and wish to share accommodation.
I don’t know how to reverse park…
The car park is plenty big enough unless you drive a massive SUV-soccer-mum-mobile. Vehicles and property are left entirely at your own risk.
I don’t know how to drive…
York Railway station is a two minute walk from the venue. The majority of York bus services also pass just in front of the railway station.
